Secure your jailbroken iPhone with a password change

If you have jailbroken your iPhone/iPod Touch, which enables ‘root’ access’, you could be in vulnerable to the 2 exploits which affects the iPhone. However, the good thing is that both exploits assume that you have not changed your password of the ‘root’ user for your device. The ‘root’ is basically the administrator account on your device and can access everything, which is why Apple does not enable ‘root’ access by default. Thus it is recommended to change your ‘root’ password to increase the security of your device. Here’s how:

1. Download MobileTerminal from your Cydia repository. (Use the search in Cydia)

2. Type su root and hit return. This logs you in to the ‘root’ account.

3. You will be prompted for the ‘root’ password, which is by default, alpine.

4. Now you are logged in as ‘root’. Type passwd and press return.

5. Now enter your new password. Keep in mind that it doesn’t show the text you are entering for security reasons.

6. Verify your password by retyping it.

7. Once the password is changed, type exit and press return. This is to log out of ’root’ user.

Well, being in Singapore has its downfalls. All these types of conferences happen across the world and thus the timing is all in the middle of the night for people here. Anyway, here are the timing for the WWDC. I can’t wait.

Google Wave

Google Wave, along with HTML 5. Totally changes the way we communicate online. I haven’t felt like this sort of excitement since the release of the first iPhone. Here’s the Google Wave Developer Preview at Google I/O 2009 if you want to watch it. It’s an hour and 20 minutes long.

China bans all Blogger Blogs

275 million blogs hosted on Blogger and they are block in China. That is one great firewall. Blogger access have been blocked since 17th May. The people should have their freedom. From labnol.org:

This “crackdown” could have some relation to June 4, 2009, the day when the world will mark the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident or it may even be a service disruption because Google is saying that they are “working to restore access to Blogger in China.”

In either case, users have been unable to access Blogger inside China since May 17th.

Google Chrome 2: New Features, Speed Increased

The first version of Google Chrome was released 8 months ago. Since then it has been constantly improving. Google Chrome 2.

Improved New Tab Page: The most requested feature from users was the ability to remove thumbnails from the New Tab page. Now you can finally hide that embarrassing gossip blog from the Most Visited section.

Increased Stability: Google Chrome is more stable than ever–we have fixed over 300 bugs that caused crashes since launch.

Increased Speed: Making the web faster continues to be our main area of focus. Thanks to a new version of WebKit and an update to our JavaScript engine, V8, interactive web pages will run even faster.
